HOMEWORK

Due in Wednesday, 26th September

Select three of these screen shots and discuss in detail how the scenes and the representations fit the social realist genre. Refer to stereotypes in your answer, and remember to use as much media language as possible: camerawork, mise-en-scene, colour symbolism and connotations.

  1. Photo four is an over the shoulder shot, the over the shoulder shot gives us (the audience)an effect and makes the scene more dramatic in its own way , this photo shows a lot, as you can see its Tre and Ricky’s mother and they both look emotional, I can tell this by Tre’s face expression and as you can see it looks like Ricky’s mother is looking down and implies that something is wrong. In the background of this photo you can see a dark skinned boy with a hat on and he looks quite happy but the background is blurred out so the focus is on Rick’s mother and Tre.
Photo one is a medium shot , Ricky and his mother look very happy and look like they’re in a safe environment (there house), there isn’t much to say about this photo.
Photo four is of the boy that shot Ricky, this photo is taken from a right angle, and the boy isn’t looking towards the camera, he is looking at Ricky and concentrating on the scope of the gun and is aiming at Ricky and his face expressions don’t show much, no fear, no nothing and again, the background is blurred and focused on the boy and the gun.

    1. Photo 3 - well done, good points. The blurring of the background is called a 'shallow depth of field', so only the closest elements of the scene are crisp and clear.
Photo 1 - what about how happy they look, and the bright gold shirts? They match, showing solidarity, and they're waiting for Ricky's university interview: an optimistic moment of aspiration which, as this is a social realist film, the audience knows may end in disaster.
Photo 4 - not connecting with the audience - and connotations of red for danger...

  2. Picture one is a mid shot, two shot (because there are two people in the screen shot) and a head and bust shot. This enables the audience to observe the setting in the background and the characters body language. The lighting used is hard lighting. This effect this has is that it emphasizes Ricky's masculinity as you can view his broad shoulders.
These two individuals break the stereotype of how people in social realist films would present themselves. It would be stereotyped that they would be wearing street clothing and preferably a cap. However, they are presenting themselves in a formal manner.
The colour of their clothes is a visual representation of South Central LA. The colour yellow connotes sun and warmth- which best describes South Central LA.
The angle of the picture is slightly low, creating a worms eye view. This implies that the two individuals think they have a higher status than us which makes us feel intimidated and puts the audience in a vulnerable position.
Picture two is a close up head and shoulder shot as well as a two shot. The lighting is natural lighting. This creates a realistic effect as it represents the sunny place they live in. Both Tre and Doughboy are wearing black tops. The connotations behind the colour black are usually negative as it can mean death. In this specific scene, the colour is connoting death as it is shortly after Ricky died.

Picture four is a close up and a head and shoulder shot. It enables us as the audience to clearly view the setting and the facial expressions of the character in sight. In this picture, the facial expression of the person is very angry as he is screwing his face. He is also holding a gun. The owning of a gun symbolizes power, strength and invisibility. With a gun, it raises your status and makes you feel powerful as people would feel intimidated by you. The colour of the car is red. The connotations of red can have representations of both positive or negative things. In this situation, it connotes danger and blood as he preparing to shoot and kill someone.
He would be stereotyped by society as a typical youth as he wis wearing urban clothing and a red cap. The cap is also a symbol of danger.

    1. Excellent points on Picture 1. What is happening at this point in the film? Why are they smartly dressed and smiling? (It's Ricky's interview... and how will it all end?) Picture 2 - good - what about the contrast between the bright sunshine and the characters' moods?
Good points on picture 3 as well, and well done for referring to stereotypes. You might want to link this to the social realist genre - he feels powerful, but he is in fact trapped in a cycle which will ultimately get him gunned down as well.

  3. Photo 1 is a medium shot, bust shot and two shot. The camera angle is low angle so we seem at a lower status than them.In this image you can see the characters costume and facial expression, the actors facial expression is happy and their costumes are brightly colored. Their brightly colored costumes connotate a happy mood. This is not stereotypical for social realist films because in social realist films you expect to see the characters wearing street clothing.

Photo 2 is a bust shot and also a two shot. The camera angle is slightly lower angle but it could also seem at eye level too to show that we are at an equal status to them. In this shot you can see the characters facial expressions clearly- you can tell that something bad has happened. This is the conversation that Tre and Doughboy have after Ricky is shot and Doughboy kills Ricky's murderers. The black on their costumes connotate a dull and sad mood.

Photo 4 is a head and shoulder shot since you can see his hand. The camera angle is lower angle since the prop which is the gun makes the guy seem powerful and more scarier. Natural light is used in the image. The red on his cap and car connotates danger and blood as this scene is the scene where Ricky is shot. The image is stereotypical because in social realist films you expect to see props such as guns, black people and street clothing.

  4. Picture 4 is an example of a head and shoulders shot, this allows the audience to see is facial expression and see what the character is doing. The characters facial expression in this photo looks focused and determined. This image is also an pure example of a social realist film, because the character in this image is aiming with his gun and he is also wearing urban clothing. This image is taken from an angle which allows us to see exactly what he's doing, it also gives the character in this image more of a superior role, because he is aiming with his gun. Due to the character having a gun it allows him to look bigger and bolder, it also gives him more of a intimidating look.

Picture 3 is a two shot and a over the shoulder shot. This allows us to focus on Trey more. Trey looks interested and worried about what Ricky's mother is saying. By looking at the side of Ricky's mother we can tell that she has something on her mind, and is worried. I also noticed that that the background has been blurred. This was done purposely to enable the audience the focus on Trey and Ricky's mother more.

  5. picture three is a close up and over the shoulder shot. this effect lets the audience see the the charactors face properly and their expressions.in this photo you can see that tre and ricky's mum have very serious facial expressions, this makes an akward dramatic effect, which suggests that there is something wrong.

pictur two is a close head and shoulder. this type of shot is used to connotes that tre and dough bough have just experienced a tragic dilemma. you can tell this because dough booy is looking down at the floor this connetates that he is heart broken, distrot and unhappy. tre and dough boy are both wearing black the portrays that they are depressed and under pressure because of rickys death. the lighting used is natural because their in LA.

picture four is a head and shoulder shot. this shot is used so the audience can see his face. the character has a strog, agressive facial expression, this is caused by the anger built up inside of him. the audienece a beneth him and he is also holding a gun, this connetates that he is superior, powerful and dominent. this makes us feel inferior, powerless and scared.

  6. In shot 2 Doughboy is scowling which we often see him do, while Tre is looking at him with a sad but curious expression. The scene is after Doughboy has taken revenge and both characters are wearing black, a sign of mourning and despair. The shot is at eye level and at head and shoulders height, placing us opposite Tre which allows us to see things from Tre's perspective but also see his expression.

Shot 4 is a head and shoulders shot of Ricky's killer, before he takes the shot. The lighting is natural and the scene is side lit, highlighting the gun and the characters face. He is attentive as he peers down the iron sight of his gun and he has a determined expression with no sign of hesitation before the murder. This can tell us alot about his character even in such a short scene, it tells us he is desensitized around violence and has no regrets.
The colour of both his cap and car is red, representing blood and gore. It also may represent a gang such as the bloods.

In shot 2 Ricky's mother is looking to the side as she speaks but Tre is looking at her with interest in what she has to say. The background is blurred which drives out attention towards the two characters. The shot is over the shoulder and although Tre appears bright from the side lighting, Ricky's mother appears darker and in shadow which is quite ominous.

  7. Image 3 is an image of Tre and Ricky's mother it's an over the shoulder shot and it's at eye level, the connotations of this image include the lighting which comes in from the left and because they are outside we can tell it's natural lighting, and the lighting comes from behind the characters it sets focus on the characters expressions. The expression on both of the characters face shows their concern for a certain character. There are no props in this image but there are people in the background and one person has a smile on their face, the way they are dressed shows they are at a party.

Image 4 is an image of Ricky's killer where he is aiming his gun at Ricky, the image is a medium head and shoulder shot the camera is at eye level. The lighting comes in from the left and the shadows formed on the houses in the background shows it is natural light. The prop in this image is the gun, the way the gun is being held in this image makes us feel that Ricky will not survive because the person in the car is so focused we can tell this by his eyes. The setting of this image is on a normal street.

Image 5 is an image of Brandi and Tre talking. The image is a long shot and the camera is slightly at a high angle which makes Brandi and Tre inferior. The lighting come slightly from the right and it is natural. The acting in this image indicates that Tre is trying to talk to Brandi about something and she is thinking deeply. The setting in this image is on the porch of Brandi's home.

  8. Picture one is a two shot of Ricky and his mum. This enables the audience to see the relationship between the two characters. The over all mood of the Scene is happy, this is emphasized by the yellow shirts both Ricky and his mum are wearing which connotes brightness and warmth. We can see that both characters have a good relationship with each other, by the way they are positioned closely and are wearing matching tops.

Picture two is a two shot as well as a head and shoulder shot. Helping us to focus on the actors emotions. The lighting is natural lighting, which creates a realistic effect as they are in a sunny environment and it's quite peaceful.Which is unusual in south central LA. The lighting is really soft on Tre's face making him seem innocent and powerless, which contrasts well with the black top he is wearing.Tre and Doughboy are wearing black tops, and black is usually associated with negativity or death. In this case, the black is a connotation of Doughboy and Tre mourning over Rickys death. We can see Rickys death still has an effect on Tre as his facial expression ,is quite worrying and he isn't giving Doughboy eye contact showing that he has something else on his mind.

The angle of the picture is eye level, helping the audience connect with the character and in this case make us feel sympathy for both Tre and Doughboy.

Picture four is a bust shot.Letting the audience see the facial expression and the characters hands. The lighting used is natural but is coming from the side, showing depth and emphasizing the characters facial expression which is screwing, he seems to be looking straight ahead and not taking his eyes off his target. The lighting also shows his masculine features.
He is holding a gun, which makes the audience feel intimidated and worried of what he is going to do.A gun symbolizes strength and power, exaggerating the characters status as being more powerful.

The car and the characters clothing and cap are red and black. These two colours are usually associated with gang culture.Making him stereotyped as a typical youth who is part of a gang. The connotations of red in this scene could be the blood that would be shed after the shooting and the black would be the death as a result of the shooting. This could be the reason why red and black are associated with gang culture, as someone always ends up shot or dead so it's almost as an acceptance of death.

  9. Picutre one is a medium shot/two shot because there's two people in the picture. In the picture it shows Ricky and his mum. Her facial expression shows that she is happy with her son. This could fit into a social realist film because some mums bring their children up as a single parent. Ricky's facial expression is that he is laughing.

Picture two is a medium shot/two shot. This picture shows Tre and Doughboy. Tre is sightly facing doughboy. Tre's facial expression is like he is concerned with doughboy. You could see this from Tre's rasied eye browns. This could fit into a social realist film because it looks like there might be a problem or issue with someone or something . Doughboy is looking away from tre almost hoping for something better.

Picture four is a close up. You can see the person and the gun. The gun can show a high status because he has power. His has an angry facial expression which could be a little bit intimidating. He would be stereotpyed because he's black and has a gun in his hand. He is wearing a cap which a lot of youths wear in urban area's.

  10. The fourth photograph is a bust shot, this allows us to see the character from the chest and up. This type of shot is appropriate for this particular scene as it enables the audience to see that the character is holding a weapon. The car and the young mans hat is red. Red symbolizes power, strength and blood. Furthermore, this could mean that the person this young man is pointing the gun at is inferior as he perhaps does not posses a weapon. In addition, the young man is also wearing a black jumper, this could mean that death is around the corner. The young man has a serious look on his face, this makes him look tough. Also, instead of wearing his cap the right way he has decided to wear it the wrong way round. Society would generally stereotype this because it makes him look like a rebel.
Photograph number 5 is a two shot and a medium long shot. This shot allows the audience to see what both characters are wearing excluding bellow the ankle. In this photo, the young girl is wearing a short skirt, her tie is undone and so is the top few buttons of her shirt. This immediately tells the audience that she is not very religious. Also, she's allowing the young man in the photo to touch her thigh which could perhaps mean that he is her boyfriend. This could be stereotyped as it may seem as if she has no respect for herself. Furthermore, the way she's sat and the look on her face could mean that she does not agree with whatever the young man is saying. The young man is dressed in a casual shirt with his top button undone. He is sat a step lower than the young girl which could mean that she has the power in this relationship. In addition, we can see that they're sat on someones front porch.
Photograph number two is a two shot close up. Both young men are dressed in black which could mean that they're mourning. Although, since the background is mostly bright colours this makes them both stand out. The look on Tre's face tells us that he is concerned and is in a lot of pain. Doughboy's face is tilted to the side and his mouth is slightly parted, which tells us that he is the one that's talking. Tre is looking directly at him which means that he is listening intently.

  11. the picture with the man with his head out the car is a representation of helplessness as he is holding a big gun pointed at his intended target showing that he is the superior male in this specific scene.
the last picture is mainly focused on the simplicity and the innocence of her uniform and the complicated pattern on his shirt which stands out although he is in LA where is hot. the shirt he is wearing is considered to be smart which shows what kind of person he is and his background.
