  1. I found Boyz n the Hood really interesting. It was quite violent, contained a lot of swear words but it did, portray the social realism of urban South central LA.What I expected to see in social realist films did appear in Boyz n the hood. For example, the film showed the main character Tre's childhood;how he grew up in a rough area with a single mother. Then there were gangs on the street, young boys being arrested, alcohol and crime. But with all this surrounding Tre- he is lucky enough to have a father Furious styles, to teach him to have strength of character, do what is right and take responsibility for his actions.
This is a strange turnout of events for fathers,in social realist films of this nature.Usually when the parents are split up the father or mother is helpless, but in Tre's life both parents have a good enough job and teach him well.

Alongside, Tre has friends Ricky and Doughboy. Who are half brothers.Ricky is an all american athelete, looking to win a football scholarship. Whilst Doughboy, succumbs to the crime environment to which they live in.It's a common thing in social realist films, where one sibling strives to success whilst, the other goes down a negative road. This does happen in our society today.Usually, the sibling who does strive for success ends up facing the consequences of the sibling who does negative things.Which we could see happen in Boyz n the hood.

My favorite scene of the film so far is when, Furious takes Ricky and Tre on a ride through their neighborhood. Then he gives them a lecture about how black people are killing themselves, going against each other building up all these gangs, drinking smoking and committing crimes.then a whole group of young black people stop to come and listen to what furious says.As they return home, there are gun shots going off, police hovering about and Tre just has an emotional breakdown- starts punching things and asks why we black people do this to themselves and when it will all stop. This moment of the film touched me. As we could see what his father said had a really huge effect on him.Tre is sick of seeing gangs on the street and people just shooting all the time.

Overall, Boys n the hood is quite an intense film.Filled with realistic life stories that we can relate to,I can't wait to finish watching the film.

    1. You've picked out some really important points and have obviously thought about this carefully, well done. It's sharp of you to have picked up on the fact that BOTH of Tre's parents are supportive, loving, well-educated and employed, and to contrast this with the disadvantages facing his friends. Tre has some protection against the problems which drag his peers down, but we know that he could still end up in the wrong place at the wrong time or make a decision which has serious consequences, and it is this sense of constant threat which gives the film some of its power and drama. That moment when he breaks down really shows how helpless he feels, and "intense" is a brilliantly apt word to use.

  2. “Boyz N The Hood” concentrates less on the conditions imposed on Black people living in a
largely white society than on the lack of respect and the lack of responsibility that so many
people in the film display. Lack of respect and responsibility, as we have already seen, are
two of the main ideas in the film.

    1. Excellent points, well done. Do you think this makes it a more powerful, complex film? Who do you blame for the problems the characters face?

  3. I found Boyz N The Hood to be a good movie. It's about a certain part of America where there is a lot of violence. It shows to the world what these place's are like and what people of the younger generation have to deal with and their stuggle in life just to stay alive. There are a lot of turning points in the film which shows all the different routes the film takes which I thought was very good. It also shows what it is like when there is a situation where there's a single parent family involved and how hard it is to bring up children on their own.

  4. I personally think Boyz N The Hood is a great film. It shows the lifestyles of young teenagers, trying to cope with the society they live in which is in south central LA. The movie contains explicit language and it also contains violent scenes. I mostly liked the fact that it started off with the characters at a young age and then later on we see them as nearly grown adults. I also liked the fact that there was a difference between the characters, because Tre had a father to look up to. Tre's father was also a committed man because he taught Tre about the qualities in life. Doughboy was completely different from Tre because he didn't have a father to look up to and his mother loved his brother more than him. Doughboy was also the more violent character.

My favourite scene was when Tre's father took Ricky and Tre to Compton. I found this scene really interesting because it showed the knowledge Tre's father had. He spoke about how the black community was killing each other off

  5. Boyz In The Hood embodied a realistic impression of black peoples lives in South Central L.A. It contrasted between the lives of many different characters and contrasted various issues within America society such as institutional racism, widespread ignorance among different ethnic groups and broken homes. I thought the film was as equally entertaining as it was food for thought.

  6. I found Boyz N the Hood very interesting and intense. What I expected to see in many social realist films did appear in the movie such as gangs, drugs, underage drinking, violence, death, young parents and black people. It is stereotypical for Social realist films to be based on Black people's lives. The movie showed us how life is like in southern central L.A. for Black people, it shows us the problems in those areas that society have chose to ignore.

However unlike many social realist Tre (the protagonist) had a male role model- his father- Furious unlike the other boys in the neighbor hood such a Ricky and Doughboy. Furious is a very good role model as he taught Tre about how black people are seen in society for e.g Furious says to Tre "There's no place for a Black man in a White mans Army." Which later Tre echos to Ricky when he says he wants to join the Army.

Friendship and Loyalty plays a big part in this movie as well as in many other Social Realist films. In a scene where one of the boys necklace is nicked his friends catch the robber and beat him up this represents friendship and loyalty.

Overall I really enjoyed Boyz N the Hood!

    1. Really good points throughout, well done. A point to consider, though: do social realist films conventionally focus on black characters, or do they conventionally focus on characters facing challenging situations and a struggle to survive?

  7. I think that "Boyz N the Hood" was incredibly moving. This movie is a social realist film as it portrays: absent fathers, broken homes, violence, sex, gangs and foul language etc. This movie concentrates on black people and their problems. Although, their problems link back to white people who are mostly absent in this movie. The only white woman shown was Tre's teacher who undermined his mother. This tells us that she stereotypes black people.

I found it ironic how the black boy with ambitions was murdered. However, the rest of the movie was fairly realistic.

  8. i think boyz n the hood was a intressting, emotional and intense film. the film portrays the lives of black people as being inferior, subordinate and have no role in society. the film also represents black people as being violent, they show this by making some of the characters have guns to look powerful and superior, for example when doughboy shows a whole group of people that he's got a gun everyone tries to avoid him. the film also depicts crime, tragic heartbreak, unhappiness and lack of responsibility.

    1. Excellent point about the characters not knowing where they fit in in society - this is called "alienation" or "disenfranchisement", because they don't feel they belong or have any kind of a say. How does the film represent violence? As a necessary step for people who have no other option, or as a tragic cycle which they should try to break out of?

  10. I found Boyz N the hood very interesting it includes everything in the social realist genre during the 1990s. Something which i found very suprising was how tre's dad took responsibilty for him and at the same time he taught Tre how to be responsible in most social realist films the dads avoid taking responsibilty of their child/children. Something i expected in the film was for someone to be murdered and especially a person who didnt deserve to die.

  11. its realy realist because in london in areas things in bad areas happen like this and all over the news in america theres alot of crime so this is almost like a true story. Its also quite predictable because the guy with all the ambitions gets killed and the guys use girls and arent very respectful, this sort of things still happen

  12. I found the film Boyz n the hood to be a very intriguing film that lives up to the standard of most social realist films. It contains violence, segregation between them and the rest of the world, sex scenes, swearing and weapons such as guns. However, Tre is a lucky child as both his parents are stable, well-educated with decent occupations and teaches valuable lessons in life. This breaks one of the stereotypes of the genre of social realist films as usually the fathers are not around.
Despite all that, a vast majority of individuals living in South Central LA (including Tre and his dad) carry a gun with them. This connotes power and makes you feel superior. Without a gun, you are likely to be killed.
There were several moments that were turning points and emotional. For example, when Ricky gets shot due to his brother (Doughboy)mistakes. Ricky was already favourited by his mum. He had high ambitions and was on the right path to success, unlike his brother Doughboy. Doughboy hangs around on the streets and gets himself involved in arguments- which leads to Ricky's death. It was an extremely tragic moment in the film as he had so much to look forward to in life and it was all taken away from him. This usually occurs in social realist films- the successful child ends up loosing his life.
Overall i think that this film is very powerful and connects with the viewers. I enjoyed it a lot.

  13. I found Boyz n the hood to be a film that keeps the viewers on the edge of their seat. It shows the standard of living in south central during the 80s. Dough boy is a drug dealer who will forever rely on the hood for a source of income, whereas Trey is a self believing individual who has been brought up with the morals of, "where you're from does not have an impact on what you can be". Even though Dough boy seems like a confident individual who demands respect. He lacks confidence so he is unable to go about his school studies and have the basic quality of self-belief.

The presence of male figures in the boys' lives have a major imapact because Trey who has his father there does not rely on a gun of fast "street money" to make himself a better person. Even though he lacks "street cred" he makes up for it with compassion and he can empathise (we see this when he does not fully judge the crackhead).

for me boyz in the hood was a very fantastic flim the reason for why i say this is because each chracters played a strong role and every characters background emotionally touched us in the audience. This movie aloso portarys: use of terrible foul American language violence, broken homes , sex ,gangster and absent fathers .

This movie shows how black people get neglected and how every they werent enough good role models , the effect of not enough good role models mean's that most children will follow the (gangsters ) style urban fashion , they way in which they talk walk and the dangerous life style the use .

this film also portrays how black people are being treated more infrior to white's .

i found this social realist film very sad and ironic how people who want to be succesful and live an normal pure life get killed , like how ricki gets shot in movie .

  15. I really enjoyed the fim boyz n the hood it was a good social realism film, the fil had everything that you would expect a fil like this to have drugs, alcahol, sex and violence but i didnt expect to see the relationship that trey had with his father as usually black males are stereotyped in these films as not looking after there children.
I was disapointed to see ricky die in the film as i would like to have seen him make something of his life and go on to do bigger things and get out of the town instead of being killed over something very petty.
but overall i think the film was very good.

  16. "Boyz n the hood" Was an interesting film it showed a lot of how much you need a mole model in life for example trey has he's dad as a role model and taught him good from bad but rickey and doughboys mum was just irresponsible as a parent so they wasn't taught right from wrong.
the film had very little respect and lots of foul language.
it was sad to see that the child that had good ambition was the one that got killed because of his irresponsible actions.
but overall i think this social realist film was good.
