AUDIENCE RESEARCH

This week's homework is to carry out audience research which will help you create a magazine that appeals to your target audience.

You can :

circulate questionnaires,
conduct interviews,
gather together several members of your target audience at once and conduct a focus group.

If you are being thorough and aiming for top marks, you should use more than more method of data collection. Make sure you only gather data from relevant people - i.e. people who fit your magazine's target audience!

You will need this for NEXT MONDAY'S LESSON, when we will write up a summary of your findings before continuing with planning. Please feel free to begin work on pie charts/graphs once you have collected your data.

LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES!

RESEARCH!

Due in Monday,19th December

Research different lifestyle magazines.

What subjects do they cover?

What titles are out there?

Who buys them?

How much do they cost?

Gather information about lifestyle magazines in general, and use this to help you pick a specific type you think you would like to focus on.

What are the biggest-selling examples of this type of magazine already available?

What do they cover?

Who buys them?

How much do they cost?

How many pages do they have?

Do they ever give away freebies? What sort?

What do you notice about the colour schemes?

Who do they feature on the cover?

How do these magazines ensure they appeal to their target audience?

REMEMBER: you are expected to conduct detailed research and show a high degree of independence in this project. There is no such thing as too much work!

In the next lesson, we will focus on close analysis of particular magazine genres. Please bring in any examples you have at home. I cannot guarantee to provide examples of every niche subject!

Additional research into other Social Realist films
Due Wednesday, 17th October

PLEASE COMPLETE ON A3 PAPER!

Complete some independent research into social realist films beyond the two we have studied in lessons. You can refer back to your first blog post to get you started.

Consider:

The plot of the film
The setting
The characters
The actors
The director
Whether or not the film was a success
The target audience
The age certificate
The message of the film
How all of these aspects fit the social realist genre

You may also like to take this opportunity to research the posters for each of these films, as this will help you to design your own. Please print off any posters you particularly like or dislike, as you can include these in your planning and research.

JOHN SINGLETON

HOMEWORK: Due in Wednesday, 10th October.

Your homework this week is NOT to post a comment!

I would like you to contribute a poster about John Singleton for display in the English corridor as part of Black History Month.

A maximum of three people to a group, please.

You may wish to include:

information about his early life
films he has worked on
stills or posters from those films
images of actors he has worked with

Please remember, this is a celebration of the works of black authors and artists and these posters will be displayed where KS3 students can see them, so make sure you are responsible in your selection of images and quotations - just as you would be in your coursework.

If you need A3 paper, please come and see me. Otherwise, A4 is fine.

I look forward to seeing your work!

SOCIAL REALIST FILMS

Social Realism in films is representative of real life, with all its difficulties. The stories and people portrayed are everyday characters, usually from working class backgrounds. Typically, films within the social realist genre are gritty, urban dramas about the struggle to survive the daily grind.

The Social Realism Genre was born in the 1960s in an era called British New Wave. Amongst the many films that emerged during the new wave of social realism, there are dozens of examples that are still popular to this day such as Look Back in Anger, A Taste Of Honey, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, This Sporting Life, Billy Liar, Cathy Come Home, Up The Junction and Room At The Top. You will probably have heard of more recent examples of social realist films, such as This is England, Kidulthood and Ill Manors.

YOUR HOMEWORK!
Research at least one social realist film (see list below)

Do NOT just copy the Wikipedia entry, and please do NOT all do the same film - try to find one no one else has done, or at least to say something no one else has said!

Post a link to a picture relating to the film (a poster, a screen shot or the DVD cover) and identify at least three ways the film fits the social realist genre.

MAKE SURE YOU COMMENT USING YOUR OWN REAL NAME, NOT "ANONYMOUS", OR IT MAY LOOK LIKE YOU HAVEN'T DONE THE WORK - AND DETENTIONS WILL ENSUE...
